Firefox 3: Google Mail als Standardmailer

English

If you like Firefox 3 and Google Mail (its Web-Frontend) you will stumble accross the same problem as I did: (Currently) you cannot configure Firefox to open Google Mail when you click on mailto:-Links.

In the internet I found many help pages about this topic. All stating nearly the same steps to perform. But some are missing and if you are lucky, you will find them in the comments. That is why I tried to offer you a summary here with an additional comment about Tab Mix Plus - another issue I had.

So what to do? Here is a step-by-step instruction:

  1. First ensure that you have Firefox 3 - this hack won't work with Firefox 2.
  2. In the URL bar type: about:config.
  3. Acknowledge that you know what you are doing (if you didn't disable this dialog before).
  4. Type gecko.handlerService.allowRegisterFromDifferentHost into the filter field. This should be set to true. Doubleclick to change. For more details and the possible security risks read the MozillaZine.
  5. Now filter for network.protocol-handler.external.mailto and ensure that its value is true (which is the default). For more details see MozillaZine.
  6. Open your Google Mail in Firefox.
  7. Ensure that you have disabled addons which open URLs entered in the URL field to be opened in a new tab. For example Tab Mix Plus.
  8. Now, having Google Mail open, type into the URL bar: javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail"). Google Apps users can use this javascript but replace yourdomain.com with your Google Apps domain name: javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https:// mail.google.com/a/yourdomain.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","Gmail")
  9. A small bar will appear inside Firefox asking you if you want to add GMail as application: answer with yes.
  10. To prevent security issues I recommend to return to about:config dialog now and set gecko.handlerService.allowRegisterFromDifferentHost to false again.
  11. As last (optional) step open your preferences. Go to the applications tab and in the search field type mailto. You can now select GMail as your default. If you don't do this step you will be asked next time you click a mailto-link what to do (with the option to set the choice made as default).

  1. Zunächst einmal stelle bitte sicher, dass Du Firefox 3 verwendest. Dieser Hack wird für Firefox 2 nicht unterstützt.
  2. In der Adresszeile gebe ein: about:config.
